Galería/Studio 24’s Digital Mural ProgramCALL TO ARTISTS FOR 24th Street Mural Series – Public Art Program (Download a .pdf of the guidelines) One of the most compelling mural sites in the city, Galería de la Raza’s public mural is a 30-year diary of San Francisco’s socio-cultural history through the eyes of Latino artists. From the dot-coms to immigration, to gender, war and dislocation, Galería’s Digital Mural Project engages diverse communities through its presentation of new genre public art billboards presenting artistic, social and political content. Galería/Studio24 invites Latino artists to submit a public art project for Galería’s Digital Mural Program. The project should address what you consider a current critical issue (social, political, cultural). The selected project will be exhibited on Galería’s 10’x24’ street level billboard located on the corner of Bryant Street and 24th. The billboard will be exhibited for a 6-week period that includes digital publication on our web site, newsletter, and various media channels. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel made up of Galería/Studio 24 affiliated artists and past Digital Mural artists, such as Guillermo Gómez-Peña, John Leaños, Julio Morales and Carolina Ponce de León. The selected project will be produced and installed on Galería’s Bryant Street 10 ft. x 24 ft. billboard in January of 2007. We recommend that you view the past five years of murals to get a feel for the issues and aesthetics of this prestigious public program at http://www.galeriadelaraza.org/eng/program/murals.html. We also encourage those who are considering entering to visit the site at 24th and Bryant and get a sense of the size and dynamic of this busy San Francisco corner. Many will have questions around the content of the murals and questions around censorship. All we can say is that some of the most powerful messages have been subtle, nuanced and carefully crafted to represent personal beliefs as they relate to contemporary issues that affect the Latino population.
