About Galeria's Internship Opportunities - Spring and Summer 2014

Galería de la Raza offers internship opportunities for college and graduate students interested in careers in the arts. Based upon their academic training and interests, as well as the availability of projects, interns work in one of the Galería's departments — curatorial, public relations, development, public programs, or our Digital Mural Project billboard. Applicants of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply

1. CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP (NOW FILLED - THANK YOU!)

Galería de la Raza has an immediate opening for a talented and motivated curatorial intern. The curatorial intern will work closely with the Curatorial & Special Programs Manager and exhibiting artists on a variety of projects including but not limited to:

  • Provide administrative support for exhibitions in the main gallery, Studio 24 and Galería’s Artist in Residence program
  • Overseeing ongoing maintenance of exhibition spaces
  • Fielding any questions from the public about exhibitions and hosting any tours
  • Assisting in the installation and de-installation of exhibitions
  • Assisting with the set up of public programs and events
  • Creating content about Galería’s exhibitions and consistently posting on Galería’s social media channels
  • Gallery sitting when needed

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of contemporary art & art history

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Photoshop

Ability to work unsupervised and follow through on long-term projects

Past experience with installing/ handling of art work and basic knowledge of tools and hardware related to exhibition installation is preferred

Ability to endure mild physical labor is a must

Some nights/weekends may be required

 

TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION:

10-15 hours per week, flexible on days committed (Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday best). This position is unpaid, but available for school credit. At least one day per week spent in-gallery

 

2. PR/DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

Galería de la Raza has an immediate opening for a multi-tasking, superstar development/PR intern. The intern will work closely with the Community Relations Manager and associated consultants, supporting and cultivating community, including but not limited to:

  • Media content : willing to assist in creating content for online channels such as social media, newsletter, and website, including photo sets, promotional videos, podcasts, artist interviews, and event documentation for archive and marketing purposes
  • Outreach to press outlets
  • Managing documentation of public programs
  • Uploading texts & images to our website
  • Database entry and management
  • Dissemination of printed promotion material
  • Edit/manage photos and event documents
  • Administer media follow up requests

 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Solid writing skills, with a capability to work under tight turnaround

Familiarity with social media platforms, some HTML, site updates

Excellent knowledge of Word, Excel, and Google platforms

Experience in Photoshop a must, video or audio editing program a plus

Past experience in public relations, photography, journalism, non-profits, or studio art/art history a plus

Being highly organized and attentive to detail is mandatory for this position

10-15 hours per week, flexible on days committed. This position is unpaid, but available for school credit. At least one day per week spent in-gallery.

 

3. SPECIAL EVENTS INTERNSHIP

Galería de la Raza has an immediate opening for a talented and motivated Special Events intern. The Special Events intern will work closely with the Public Programs & Special Events Manager on a variety of projects including but not limited to:

  • Event production and execution
  • Documentation of public programs
  • Assisting with set up of public programs and events
  • Managing volunteers for events
  • Provide support/manage visiting artists and features of events           

 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of contemporary art & art history

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Photoshop

Ability to work unsupervised and follow through on long-term projects

Past experience with event production a plus

Ability to endure mild physical labor is a must

Availability to work evenings and weekends        

 

TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION:

10-15 hours per week, flexible on days committed. This position is unpaid, but available for school credit. Most days will be spent in-gallery for this position.

 

4. ARCHIVE INTERNSHIP (NOW FILLED - THANK YOU!)

Galería de la Raza has an immediate opening for a talented and motivated curatorial intern. The archive intern will assist Galería staff in our efforts in assessing the state of both our online archive & in-house archive. The responsibilities associated with the online archive include:

  • Updating current and past exhibition pages ensuring that all exhibitions have:
  • Artist profiles associated with the exhibition
  • Curatorial statements
  • Exhibition installation & event photos
  • Creating a log of what historical information is missing
  • Organize digital files on the external hardrive
  • Research online/ cloud storage for our photos (i.e. flickr, dropbox, etc)
  • Research potential grant/ funding sources for the ongoing maintenance of the online archive

 

The responsibilities associated with the in-house physical archive include:

Assessing the current state and needs of the in-house archive - this includes researching what materials are needed to properly store artwork

Once this is complete, working with staff to come up with a budget for materials

Coming up with a new system to organize in house archive

Creating designated areas for archival materials (i.e. original artwork, publications, media, etc)

Designing a comprehensive cataloging system and index

Creating a comprehensive inventory of what is in house utilizing cataloging system

Assisting staff in determining what materials can be housed at the CEMA archive facility

Creating a digital record of materials we have in house (i.e. photographing artwork and labeling properly)

Researching potential grant/ funding sources for the ongoing maintenance of the physical archive

 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of contemporary art & art history

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Photoshop

Ability to work unsupervised and follow through on long-term projects

Past experience with archival projects, art photography and organization

Ability to endure mild physical labor is a must

 

TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION:

10-15 hours per week, flexible on days committed. This position is unpaid, but available for school credit. At least two days spent in-gallery, three would be preferred.

 

5. BILLBOARD INTERNSHIP

Galería de la Raza has an immediate opening for a talented and motivated billboard intern. The billboard intern will oversee the installation and maintenance of Galería’s public billboard program. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with artists and Galería staff to oversee the installation of the billboard which includes assessing needed materials and placing orders
  • Overseeing the ongoing maintenance of the billboard
  • Fielding any questions from the public in regards to the billboard’s history and current billboards
  • Creating content about the billboard program and consistently posting on Galería’s social media channels
  • Researching potential partnerships and opportunities for the billboard program
  • Gallery sitting when needed

 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of contemporary art & art history

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Photoshop

Ability to work unsupervised and follow through on long-term projects

Ability to endure mild physical labor is a must

Comfort on a ladder would be best

 

TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION:

2 days per week, Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday are best. This position is unpaid, but available for school credit. The majority of this position will be spent in gallery.

 

6. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (AIR) INTERNSHIP

Galería de la Raza has an immediate opening for an assistant to the new artist in resident (AIR), Jessica Sabogal. The AIR intern will work closely with the AIR on a variety of art making projects including but not limited to:

 

  • Screen printing/printmaking: responsibilities include cleaning and burning screens, hand-pulling images onto paper fabric or wood, mixing inks, paper cutting, and packaging of the final product
  • Spray painting: responsibilities include assistance with stencil cutting and storage, picking up/dropping off final designs to printer, and being the AIR’s second pair of hands when it comes to spraying
  • Murals: responsibilities include gathering/keeping watch of all materials, prepping wall for painting, maximizing time efficiency for the AIR

In addition, the AIR intern will also be responsible for:

  • Maintaining a positive and forward-thinking environment
  • Creating transparency around the AIR program by documenting and creating content for social media channels. 
  • Overseeing ongoing maintenance of the AIR studio and exhibition space
  • Fielding any questions from the public about the AIR program: (studio + concurrent gallery space).
  • Assisting in the installation and de-installation of exhibitions
  • Assisting with the set up of public programs and events
  • Studio sitting when needed

 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Interest in the contemporary art world and how it can affect change and our communities

Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator not required but highly recommended

Ability to work unsupervised and follow through on long-term projects

Past experience with installing/ handling of art work and basic knowledge of tools and hardware related to exhibition installation is preferred

Ability to endure mild physical labor is a must

Some nights/weekends required

 

TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION:

10-15 hours per week, flexible on days committed but would prefer one 8 hour day and one half day. This position is unpaid, but available for school credit. At least one day per week spent in-gallery
