#UndocuJoy: Unfathomable Strength Open Artist Call
Wed 9/27 - Thu 10/19
UPDATE: DEADLINE EXTENDED THROUGH OCTOBER 19TH!

The media has created a certain archetype of undocumented people, often conjuring images of fear and despair. These images populate the collective imagination, but rarely are undocumented people portrayed as entrepreneurs, creators and artists. Too often voices of actual undocumented people are subdued by allies feeling they need to speak on their behalf. #UndocuJoy’s goal is to challenge mainstream media and institutional portrayal of undocumented people across the US.

Galería de la Raza presents #UndocuJoy: Unfathomable Strength

Curated by Yosimar Reyes

Artist-In-Residence, Define American

The media has created a certain archetype of undocumented people, often conjuring images of fear and despair. These images populate the collective imagination, but rarely are undocumented people portrayed as entrepreneurs, creators and artists. Too often voices of actual undocumented people are subdued by allies feeling they need to speak on their behalf. #UndocuJoy’s goal is to challenge mainstream media and institutional portrayal of undocumented people across the US.

Galería de la Raza is honored to partner with Yosimar Reyes, Artist in Residence at Define American to announce an open call for its upcoming #Undocujoy: Unfathomable Strength exhibition:

#UndocuJoy is a celebration of the day-to-day spirit, passion, intelligence and empathy needed to stand taller in our power. This project will bear witness to the personal narrative which then becomes the collective voice created BY us and FOR us.  For as organizers, advocates, elected officials, professionals, and change-agents, we are the embodiment of unfathomable strength.  - Yosimar Reyes

This exhibition is open to artists who are undocumented or formerly undocumented, whose works offer a counter narrative to the immigrant dialogue in the US and highlight joy. Please take a moment to view this video written by Yosimar Reyes and produced by Define American to get a sense and understanding of what we are looking for in the artistic submissions. We are searching for diverse perspectives and experiences from around the world. Womxn of color, queer, trans and gender non-conforming visual artists and art collaborations are highly encouraged to apply.  We welcome works in all mediums and alternative practices (e.g. traditional arts, textiles, installation, sculpture, ceramics and performance based work) to apply.  Please note: if you are considering submitting work and would like to remain anonymous to the public make a note of this in your submission email, we are happy to comply with your request.
