The Brown Sheep Project

The Brown Sheep Project was a two-month performance workshop directed by Guillermo Gómez-Peña, seeking to groom emerging cultural leaders and develop new models of artist/community relations. Participants included: Lorraine Bautista, e-mael, Paul Flores, René García, Leticia Hernández, Robert Karimi, Mary Mendoza, Noelia Mendoza, Gigi Otalvaro, René Yañez, and Norman Zelaya.

Brown Sheep Project: Hybrid Superheroes Fighting Cultural Gentrification.

Culti-multuralism:
An esperantic Disney world- view in which all cultures, races and sexes live happily together. The term went out of use in 1992.

We've replaced the bankrupt notion of the melting plot with a model that is more germane to the times, that of the menudo chowder. According to this model, most of the ingredients do melt, but some stubborn chunks are condemned merely to float.



Contemporary Americans have arrived to the 21st century experiencing acute vertigo. Our sense of worth and prosperity as a nation has been blown out of proportion by the absence of formidable enemies as well as by the threat of mythical ones. In the international arena, we are no longer accountable to anyone. At home, the backlash against multiculturalism has thoroughly completed its mission: sensitive questions of race and gender and matters of diversity are all perceived as issues of the past. The unspoken text is “Racism is passé.” We are now allegedly installed in a fully globalized, post-racial, post-racist, post-civil rights era, and anyone who thinks otherwise is clearly out of touch with the times.

The Brown Sheep Project was the result of a 2-month performance workshop sponsored by Galería de la Raza, La Pocha Nostra and Circuit Network in collaboration with La Peña Cultural Center. Ten selected performance artists spanning 3 generations, were asked to develop a "hybrid persona" based on their complex identities and personal sense of race and gender. An ongoing analysis of the creative process paralleled the production of the piece. Each participant is responsible for his/her material. However, the overall result is a true collaborative effort.

Brown Sheep seeks to groom emerging cultural leaders and help them sharpen their activist performance skills; develop new models of relationship between artist and community which are not colonial or condescending; create a new mentoring relationship between established artist and emerging artists; create utopian spaces of freedom and cross-racial unity through experimental art; and ultimately seek a new aesthetic that truly reflects the times.
