Robert C. Buitron

An artist, educator, independent curator, and writer, Robert C. Buitron received a MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago, 1996, and a BFA from Arizona State University (ASU) 1980. He has taught at the University of Minnesota, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Elgin Community College. He teaches photography part time at College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and does wedding photography on weekends.

He plays several roles when not teaching or doing weddings –cook, gardener, housecleaner, landscaper, dishwasher, dog walker, home destruction/reconstruction, and window washer. So when does he do his art and other artistic stuff? Every chance he gets when he’s not tired or procrastinating.

His last exhibition was this past March 2005, in Tucson, which included work from a new series called Inflating Culture. He has exhibited his photographs throughout the U.S, as well as in England, Germany, Mexico, and Spain. Some of the awards he has received include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, The Art Matters Foundation Fellowship, and Illinois Arts Council Visual Artist Fellowship.

Buitron has organized exhibitions as a guest curator for several arts organizations, the most recent, Picarte: Photography Beyond Representation, for The Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona. Other organizations have included FotoFest, Houston, Texas, and MARS Artspace, Phoenix, Arizona.
