GalerÃa de la Raza: Looking Toward The Future
Monday, August 1, 2022Take a look at where Galería de la Raza is headed in the near future and what we've been up to over the last couple of years!
In 2018, Galería was evicted from its 48-year, month-to-month rental site and since then has been working to move to its permanent site in the year 2022. The goal is to ensure Galería’s role as a local and international platform for expression of the highly diverse and evolving Latinx culture is anchored for future generations. By extension, it will continue to further enrich the overall cultural life, history, and entrepreneurship of San Francisco and the Bay Area.
Galería’s move to a permanent site in the Mission is part of a strategic vision informed by creative “place keeping” practices in which community arts are central to navigating the complex intersections of urban redevelopment, social inequality, affordable housing, and the historical cultural legacies of communities of color.

Studio 24
This site is designed to accommodate a diverse range of education and public programs such as: artist residency, working print studio, workshops, matrix educational exhibits, and programs engaging the community along with providing administrative offices, break room, kitchenette and storage. The facility is designed as a highly flexible space for both children and adults. With the option to open onto the outdoor garden, this flexible use venue provides a much-needed set of spaces for Galería’ future educational programming
Residency Program:
This would be the Artist In Residency Program that would host artists on a rotating basis to conduct education training/community engagement and artistic collaborations with artists focused on a local dialogue. The residency would have the ability to offer dedicated art studio space and overnight hosting capabilities that would allow Galería to extend outreach to out-of town-artists and overall develop a workforce strategy and investment for emerging artists.
Education Matrix Gallery:
This smaller gallery will focus on showcasing works produced on site through the print studio and or by partnerships/works created through the residency program.
Educational Workshop Open Space:
A flexible area, this is envisioned as a print studio platform that would have large-scale working tables to print and work in an open space. The print studio equipment (e.g., exposure unit, screen prep, studio sink, materials) would be stored/layout in one of the closet areas as many of these materials need to be under light to no light.
Studio 16
This overall programming site includes: art storage, gallery equipment storage, exhibit preparation areas, art shipping and receiving areas, event equipment storage, food prep/kitchen area, staff break room, and administrative offices for the exhibit and event personnel.
Main Gallery:
While Galeria’s Studio 24 programming site offers a matrix gallery option for education-based exhibits, the Studio 16 site will house its Main Gallery. This visual art gallery is designed to be highly flexible: with mobile walls, adjustable lighting, humidity and temperature control, flooring to accommodate various 2 and 3 dimensional mediums, projection and sound wired for demanding needs, and other specifications necessary for exhibits of varying sizes.
Flexible-Use Venue:
The facility is designed as a highly flexible space for both in-house use and as an important earned revenue generating/sliding-scale rental facility for strategic community non-profit partnerships and private sector/corporate rentals. With the option to open onto the outdoor garden, this flexible use venue provides a much needed and key facility for Galería programming. This flexible venue includes: adjustable walls allowing for intimate event spaces or larger events requiring use of the entire room; sound/light control booth (for performance based works), loading dock access, equipment storage, dressing rooms, catering kitchen, and reception/ticketing. This area would also function as the primary rental space with a maximum capacity of 480 people standing or 140 seats.
