The Lunada Spring season opener comes early this year and starts with a bang! For this total lunar eclipse under a super blue moon, we feature the soulful spoken word of Jahan Khalighi and the tambores y cantos of Alianza del Tambor, artists dedicated to the healing power of the drum and story, as we begin our year rooted to the earth, with our eye to the sky.

OPEN MIC: Sign-up at 7pm, 10 spots on the list, 5 min. ea. poets, storytellers, emcees, musicians, laureates, veteranos, and first-timers invited to share their voices under the lunar spotlight.

LUNADA is the Bay Area’s only full moon bilingual literary ritual & performance gathering devoted to spoken word, música, song, and story. Located in the heart of the Mission District at Galería de la Raza, and guest curated by some of the Bay Area’s most dynamic word slingers and artists, each LUNADA features community poets, local legends, visiting mystics, and other mero meros of the stage. Voted Best Literay Night of 2017 & 2016 by the San Francisco Bay Guardian.


JAHAN KHALIGHI is a Bay Area based poet, musician and educator, a weaver of loose threads, a word dancer, student, teacher, artist armed with seeds to plant and stories to chant. As a former member of the Eugene Slam Poetry team, he has performed at three consecutive National Poetry Slams across the country. As a Poet-Teacher for California Poets In The Schools, he facilitates creative writing workshops in schools, juvenile halls, arts festivals and after school programs up and down the West Coast. He serves as an organizing member of the Justice Arts Collective at Chabot College, an evolving arts for social change project providing platforms for student voice and creative expression in times of challenge. He is a next generation artist facilitator of The Planetary Dance and had the honor of leading a performance ritual dedicated to peace at the annual 2017 Venice Bienalle, in Italy.

ALIANZA DEL TAMBOR Established in early 2018, Alianza del Tambor is a collective of drummers, dancers, singers, poets and activists who strongly believe in the importance of cultural heritage. Dedicated to the healing powers of the drum and the stories it tells, their goal is to create sustainable, healthy communities spaces  and events where freedom of expression, choice and autonomy thrive.
