A series of window installations and displays by local artists

Galería de la Raza is proud to introduce the launch of Studio 24 Presents, a series of window installations and displays by local artists to be featured at our new administrative offices. By effectively utilizing our corner space (the corner of 24th Street and Bryant Street) and large windows, Studio 24 Presents will be an extension of our public art programming, which includes the Digital Mural Project billboard on Bryant Street. This program will provide an opportunity for artists to interact with the general public by inserting a bit of whimsy into the everyday, whether it be strolling down 24th Street or waiting for the bus.

Studio 24 Presents also offers visual artists another point of entry into the organization, apart from Galería’s institutional exhibition programs. This new program seeks to raise the visibility of artists and promote artwork sales, providing both the artists and the organization new opportunities for economic sustainability.

We are delighted to launch this program with artist Viviana Paredes, a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture and glass work. Paredes is a Bay Area native, born and raised in San José, California, and in 2001 graduated from the California College of the Arts with an emphasis in sculpture. Influenced by her grandmother Petra, a native of Chihuahua, México, Paredes was exposed to the ancient tradition of Curanderismo (a holistic healing practice that uses medicinal plants to aid physical and spiritual ailments). Informed by this alternative method of healing, her work stems from a deep sense of belonging to something greater than the self. Through her art making process, Paredes explores the disconnect modern society has with nature and the delicate interrelationships present in the natural world.

Paredes’ art has been included in exhibitions throughout the United States and México. In 2007, the Don Julio Tequila Company acquired Paredes’ seminal series, My Pocha Tongues, for their collection, Nuevo Arte, Colección Tequila Don Julio, which debuted in New York City. In Texcoco, México, her work was part of the 2008 Chapingo Biennial, 1er Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo Bienal Chapingo: Arts with Roots in the Earth. In 2010, Paredes was one of the featured artists at the Triton Museum of Santa Clara’s Bay Area Chicana exhibition series Xicana: Spiritual Reflections/Reflexíones Espiritúales. Most recently, Paredes was awarded the prestigious month-long Artist-In-Residence at the de Young Museum of Art in San Francisco scheduled for October 2014.
