#UndocuJoy: Unfathomable Strength Open Artist Call
Curated by Yosimar Reyes
UPDATE: DEADLINE EXTENDED THROUGH OCTOBER 19TH!
The media has created a certain archetype of undocumented people, often conjuring images of fear and despair. These images populate the collective imagination, but rarely are undocumented people portrayed as entrepreneurs, creators and artists. Too often voices of actual undocumented people are subdued by allies feeling they need to speak on their behalf. #UndocuJoy’s goal is to challenge mainstream media and institutional portrayal of undocumented people across the US.

Fundraiser for Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Mexico City

Galería de la Raza has partnered with community leaders to host a fundraiser to send money and goods to those affected by the earthquakes in Mexico.

The initial goal was to host an event that would raise funds to send back to Oaxaca, MX.  The latest update is that thousands are now homeless, 1/3 of some towns have completely fallen down, buildings are still falling, and worse, the tremors and aftershocks continue.  The hardest hit areas was in Istmo and Chiapas.

In the process of organizing this event, another earthquake hit which then affected several other areas: Jujutla, Morelos, CDMX, Puebla.

Our goal now is to raise as much money to then re-grant it to NGOs on the ground doing relief work.  In addition, we have received word that many buildings although they are still standing, have been condemned which has displaced many people who are not receiving help.

9/23/2017 - 10/7/2017

Queerly Tèhuäntin | Cuir Us

Check out our review in the SF Chronicle!

Read our review in Hyperallergic here!

With this exhibition, Galería de la Raza presents a visual dialog across borders and generations about the ongoing struggle to be simultaneously Mexican or Chicanx and queer, that is, to be who we are.  To be queerly tehuantin,  Nahuatl for “us”.  To be queerly us.  Queer—or cuir, as the term is increasingly used in Spanish—in the sense of noncoventional sexualities and nonnormative gender expressions. Cuir us.
